When I think of my childhood, I think of my mom in the kitchen..making pancakes on snow days, baking cookies for school events, packing lunches, and preparing family dinners. It was important to my mother that we ate real food, nothing packaged. And she did it all on a tight budget. Meal times were family time, eaten together at the table where we discussed the day's events. Sunday dinners were always a little extra special and often we had guests, my mother loved having dinner guests.
From a very young age, she welcomed us into the kitchen to help her. My sister and I would fight to lick the cookie batter beaters. My friends loved coming to visit, not only for the great food but for my mom's warmth, wisdom and humor. To this day, she can be found in the kitchen whipping up one of her old favorites or experimenting with a new recipe. My sister and I often call her seeking her tips and expertise as we now cook for our own families, attempting to provide our own children with the good food and memories our mother gave to us.
The recipes on this web site have been handed down to me. Some were family recipes, others came from various cookbooks throughout the years. I wish I knew the names of those cookbooks to give credit but all I have are the recipes written by my mom.
